PERSISTENCE PAYS OFF. Once asthmatic, once relegated to Team B, Teytey Teodoro is now one of the lead pilots for JRU.
With how he carried Jose Rizal University during their match against Lyceum of the Philippines University last Friday, it may come as a surprise that Teytey Teodoro is only a sophomore. With his athleticism, it might be even harder to believe that he used to be asthmatic.
As a kid, Teytey would hide playing basketball from his parents as he shared with ABS-CBN Sports, “Ayaw talaga akong ipag-basketball ng mga magulang ko kaya lagi akong palihim nun.” Still, his persistence eventually got them to agree and a few years later, he also overcame asthma.
It was this same tenacity that bumped him from Team B to Team A and then from being benched to becoming a starter for the Heavy Bombers. It entailed a lot of sacrifice, but he didn't let this opportunity go to waste as he recalled, “Ako na yung pinagkakatiwalaan. Kailangan ko i-grab yung pagkakataon.”
Now with a young squad after the departure of Philip Paniamongan and Michael Mabulac, Teytey knows that he is expected to step up and lead.
JRU capped off Season 90 with a third-place finish and the team is raring to make another semifinals appearance.Â
With most of the teams vastly improving, Teytey encourages himself and his teammates to double their effort. “Gitna pa lang kami sa standing kaya dapat bawat game, patayan na. Kailangan na naming pumukpok kasi Final Four talaga ang target,” he said.
