KEEPING THE FAITH. With several PBA veterans calling the shots, Joseph Gabayni has all the confidence that Lyceum is bound to go smooth sailing sooner than later.
Lyceum of the Philippines University’s loss to Jose Rizal University last Friday was their fourth in the early-going in the 91st Season of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.
With only one win under their belt, Pirates’ big man Joseph Gabayni is caught wondering about what they've been doing wrong. “Okay naman ginagawa namin sa practice, but pagdating sa game, nagkakaganun. Tinatanong ko rin nga kay coach kung ano nangyayari,” he shared with ABS-CBN Sports.
Head coach Topex Robinson transferred from Recto to Intramuros this season and brought along a star-studded staff that includes PBA veterans Rommel Adducul and Gary David. They’ve made quite a number of changes since taking over and the Pirates are doing their best to comply.
Leading the charge is Gabayni as he said, “Sabi sa akin ni coach, just trust in the system. Yun naman yung ginagawa ko.” Joseph puts his 100% confidence in his new mentors and embraces what they’re introducing to the team because according to him, “maganda naman ang sistema – hindi pangtalo at hindi rin basta-basta ang mga coaches namin.”
He shared how thankful he is to be around the presence of PBA stars, even more so being mentored firsthand by them. “Sila, mga professional player na may pangalan sa PBA. Masaya ako na nandito sila sa amin tapos tinuturo mga experience nila, kung ano yung ginawa para makarating doon,” he said.
As such, Joseph admitted that the what ails the Pirates possibly lies with the players themselves. As one of the team’s leaders, he plans on giving everyone, including himself, a much-needed wakeup call by stating, “Hindi pwedeng magpabaya. Kailangan na namin ito pag-usapan. Tapos we have to walk the talk. Hopefully, mas gumanda record at mas magkakumpyansa kami.”
