CONTINUED MASTERY. Art Dela Cruz turned in another stellar all-around effort as San Beda reinforced their master over Perpetual.
Billed as a duel between new-age rivals in just the early going of the NCAA 91 Men's Basketball Tournament, the meeting between San Beda College and University of Perpetual Help did not disappoint.
Childhood friends Scottie Thompson and Gab Dagangon rallied their troops and vanquished an 11-point deficit in the final frame, but it was the championship connection of Ola Adeogun and Michole Sorela who had the final say as the Red Lions topped the Altas anew, 83-81, on Tuesday at the San Juan Arena.
Adeogun and Sorela teamed up for San Beda’s last six points and also made the defensive plays in the endgame to send their team to 5-1. Describing his team’s win, coach Jamike Jarin said in his post-game interview, “They fought back, but we fought back harder.”
Art Dela Cruz ended with 25 points, 17 rebounds, and six assists while Adeogun and Sorela merged for 26 markers and 23 boards. In the endgame, Adeogun didn't allow Bright Akhuetie any easy baskets and sent the Altas’ reinforcement to the line where he missed two out of four while Michole Sorela forced a turnover off Thompson in what proved to be the game’s decisive possession.
The new-age rivals traded blows and Perpetual was ahead, 45-42, in the middle of the third until the Red Lions unleashed a 23-9 charge for a 65-54 lead early in the fourth. That wide gap was shortlived, however, as Dagangon drilled three straight triples to bring the Altas to 63-65 with 7:24 remaining.
Back-to-back baskets by Thompson trimmed the deficit to a single point, but Dan Sara’s three-point play re-established a 79-75 San Beda advantage inside the last three minutes. Perpetual still kept coming and were only behind, 81-79, with 6.8 ticks on the clock before Thompson’s turnover off Sorela.
Following two free throw makes, the Red Lions kept a window for their opponents by fouling Thompson while he was attempting a three. However, the reigning MVP, an 83 percent free throw shooter coming into the game, missed the first.
Thompson made his next two free throws, but time ran out on the Altas. All in all, the reigning MVP missed eight of 13 charities, including three in the last two minutes.
Perpetual fell for the second time in a row despite the best efforts from Akhuetie who finished with 25 points and 16 rebounds.
