With first win, EAC proves they shouldn't be underestimated
FUEL TO THE FIRE. Sidney Onwubere and EAC were out to prove all their doubters wrong.

After five unsuccessful tries, Emilio Aguinaldo College finally barged into the win column in the 91st Season of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.

The Generals downed San Sebastian College-Recoletos, 77-71, on the back of double-doubles by Cameroonian Hamadou Laminou (18 points and 12 rebounds) and Filipino-Nigerian Sidney Onwubere (13 points and 14 rebounds).

More than their winless record, the duo shared that a quote from their opponents’ coach lit a fire under their bellies. Talking about Golden Stags mentor Rodney Santos, Onwubere told ABS-CBN Sports, “Ang pagkakabasa ko (in one game preview), sabi ni coach na pwede kaming manalo sa ibang team pero hindi sa kanila. Hindi raw kami mananalo ngayon.”

Once they proved Santos and many others wrong, the Fil-Nigerian said that he felt the weight being lifted from the entire EAC community. Talking about the rush of emotions when the final buzzer sounded, Onwubere said, “Sobrang saya. Napatalon ako na finally nakuha na namin yung unang panalo.”

He continued, “Pagdating namin ng school, sigurado lahat tuwang-tuwa. Babalik na suporta nila.”

The Generals came into the game as the only team yet to win in the season and wanted to take the opportunity to make a statement. “Gusto naming i-prove na kahit wala pa kaming panalo, we're still fighting for a spot in the Final Four,” Onwubere said.

Indeed, EACfinally proved they belong as they stunned a San Sebastian side captain Jamil Ortuoste admitted to have been overconfident. “Sobrang nanghinayang kasi kayang-kaya namin, pero pinabayaan namin,” he told ABS-CBN Sports.

He added, “Ang mindset namin, amin na ‘to kahit hindi pa namin nakuha.”
