MOVING ON. Michael Calisaan and Ryan Costelo teamed up to beat their former mentor's new team.
Michael Calisaan erupted for a career-high 35 points to go along with 16 rebounds and Ryan Costelo added 12 markers of his own as the San Sebastian-Recoletos Golden Stags gained their second victory in the NCAA 91 Men's Basketball Tournament after beating former coach Topex Robinson and his Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates, 77-70, on Friday at the San Juan Arena.
Robinson's new squad sprinted to a 26-20 lead after the first 10 minutes before San Sebastián‘s half-court press turned zone defense shut them down to only nine points in the second.
On offense, Calisaan outran and outworked everyone for a total of 23 points in the first half to give Golden Stags a 48-35 lead by halftime. With Lyceum threatening at 70-75 inside the last 80 seconds, it was then Costelo who kept them at bay with two free throws.
Calisaan and Costelo were recruited and mentored by Robinson in his last year in Recto. Talking about Costelo whom he inherited from Robinson, first-year head coach Rodney Santos said in his post-game conference, “Lagi kong sinasabi sa kanya na this is going to be his breakout season and he has not let us down.”
Vic Nguidjol pounded in 14 points to front the effort for Robinson's new Pirate crew who lost for the seventh time in eight tries.
