STARS COLLIDE: Perpetual’s Thompson vs Arellano’s Jalalon
SIBLING RIVALRY. Scottie Thompson and Jiovani Jalalon staged a duel to determine who the best playmaker in the league is.

Last Thursday’s battle between last year’s semifinalists University of Perpetual Help and Arellano University was a pretty close and exciting match.

…Until the third quarter, when the offense stopped clicking for the Chiefs.

Even star player Jiovani Jalalon visibly struggled, scoring only two points in the second half and missing consecutive open shots. “Parang nawalan kami ng lakas kasi lahat ng tira, hindi talaga pumapasok. Maganda sana yung laban kung naka-shoot kami, pero naunahan na ng kalaban,” he sadly shared with ABS-CBN Sports.

Despite having been able to contain Altas’ leader Scottie Thompson in the earlier parts of the game, Jalalon acknowledged that they failed to do a good job defending Nigerian reinforcement Bright Akhuetie, especially with their own big man Dioncee Holts fouling out.

While ABS-CBN Sports was talking to him after, Jio was noticeably upset and frustrated after what he described to be his toughest game in the season. However, of all people who could possibly cheer him up, it was ironically his opponent Scottie who shook his hand and encouraged him to bounce back.

The last time these two gentlemen shared the court was during their stint as Gilas cadets back in the summer. Although they knew each other even before, it was the experience representing the country that brought them closer as Scottie recalled, “Magkakwarto kami nun tapos parang naging magkapatid na rin. Sobrang may nabuong friendship tapos bonding.”

Asked how it felt going back to being rivals on court, both he and Jio were actually very excited coming into the game.“Kulitan pa kami nyan. Biro ko pa nga na sana pagbigyan naman nila kami kasi dalawang straight na talo na ako,” Thompson said.

However, Scottie believes Perpetual’s win wasn’t out of usapang kaibigan. “’Di naman namin pine-personal yung laro na ito na parang para sa amin lang. Siyempre para sa teams yung ginagawa namin kaya pagdating sa court, trabaho talaga,” he said.

Scottie is happy to have finally broken their losing streak, but he’d be just as happy to see his brother get his game back.
