WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS. Once bottom-dwelling EAC felt like they won the championship when they upset once league-topping Letran.
Right after their first victory of the season, Emilio Aguinaldo College warned the league not to take them likely.
However, the league-leaders apparently did not receive the memo and was on the wrong end of the biggest surprise of the year. Last Friday at the San Juan Arena, the Generals became the first team to sully Colegio de San Juan de Letran’s once immaculate record.
“Parang nag-champion yung feeling,” coach Andy de Guzman told ABS-CBN Sports, sharing how he and his team were feeling.
The EAC coach was so appreciative of what his often forgotten boys accomplished – something that the five-peat champions or the other three semifinalists a year ago were unable to – by saying, “Sa dugout, wala akong sinabi sa kanila kundi ‘Thank you.’”
Asked about the first thing that came to his mind once the final buzzer sealed his team’s 83-69 triumph, coach Andy de Guzman said, “Naisip ko, ‘Dyaryo na to!’” The first-year head coach wasn’t wrong as EAC’s upset stood alongside #PUSO2019 and Jimmy Alapag’s PBA return as the biggest sports stories.
However, de Guzman also reminded everyone that the upset was only their second win of the season which has not even reached its halfway point. “Sabi ko rin sa mga bata, cherish this win, then we’ll get back to work on Monday,” he said.
When they do get back to work, the Generals’ mentor said he expects his wards to come out with the same fire they showed in their back-to-back wins. “The confidence ng mga bata, nakuha na nila so sana tuloy-tuloy na to,” he said.
