GROWING UP. Michael Calisaan's breakout season has been a bright spot in San Sebastian's thus far disappointing season.
San Sebastian College-Recoletos has already had a number of heartbreaking almosts thrus far in the ongoing NCAA season, but last Friday saw them finally break through with a huge victory.
Leading the Golden Stags to their second win in the eight games and posting a career-high 35 points was second-year forward Mike Calisaan. Talking about his breakout performance, he told ABS-CBN Sports, “Ito yung pinaka-best kong laro sa NCAA. Talagang pinagsikapan ko ito. Every day, every practice, hard work talaga.”
During his rookie year with the Recto-based squad, Mike barely saw action. Aside from the veterans in front of him, he felt like he wasn’t ripe and ready yet for the very physical league.
Although he played in the juniors division, college ball was a completely different story and it caught him by surprise. “Sa ligang ito, banggaan at pisikilan. Nagulat at sobrang nahirapan ako last year. Hindi ko magawa yung pinagawa tapos nawawala ako sa focus,” he said.
After a very frustrating year, both individually and collectively with his team, Mike resolved to make his presence felt this time around especially with their key players gone. After fulfilling that promise to himself, the Pampanga native also gave credit to former mentor Topex Robinson – who recruited and guided him in his first year – and new head coach Rodney Santos – who continues to put his faith in him.
Finding themselves at the bottom of the standings, Calisaan admits it's a little difficult not to feel down as he shared, “Minsan nga nakakahiyang pumasok sa class, lalo na kapag galing sa talo.”
Still, in the tradition of the brave San Sebastian Golden Stags from before, Mike re-assured their school community that they will continue fighting. “Ie-enjoy namin ang bawat laro. May second round pa naman kami kaya patuloy pa rin,” he said.
