Anong nangyari? We were not able to inbound properly. Nobody wanted the ball. Lahat nagtago sa bola, natatakot na mag-take charge --- Mapua coach Atoy Co
“Learn from this game. That’s all.”
This is the short post game message of Mapua coach Atoy Co to his wards inside their dugout after the Cardinals wasted an 18-point lead in a painful loss to the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers in the 91st NCAA Seniors basketball competition on Tuesday at The Arena in San Juan.
Co, back in the bench after serving a one-game ban, cited the lack of maturity of his players in closing down games that did them in not to mention missing the services of injured guard CJ Isit and scorer Josan Nimes.
“But the lesson of the day ay nawalan ako ng take charge guy,” said Co after their 87-90 defeat. “Sana kung napunta doon si CJ o si Josan na may puso to take charge. Si Andretti (Stevens) na lang ang may puso kaya lang na-disqualify.”
“Sad, sad day.”
Darell Menina, John Nieles and Stevens fouled out one after the other in the closing moments.
The Cardinals held an 84-66 lead with four minutes remaining but the Heavy Bombers blasted a telling 24-3 finish to shock Mapua.
It was JRU’s guard Teytey Teodoro who did all the damage, finishing with 32 points highlighted by his late game heroics.
With 8.1 seconds to go with JRU, trailing by a point, 86-87, Teodoro passed up on a three-pointer, drove to an open lane and drew the defense of Allwell Oraeme before hitting the lay up over the outstretched arms of the Mapua import with 3.3 ticks to go.
The Cardinals turned the ball over in the next play, Dave Sanchez was fouled and drilled the pair of charities with 2.3 seconds to give JRU a three-point cushion. Mapua's Justin Serrano's desperation heave from half court just hit the rim as time expired.
“Anong nangyari? We were not able to inbound properly. Nobody wanted the ball. Lahat nagtago sa bola, natatakot na mag-take charge,” Co said.
“And then yung may hawak ng bola nagpa-pressure, sabi ko waste time na lang e. Yung last part sabi ko just consume the last 24 seconds that’s it e, di ba? E pinaagaw. Idrinibol-dribol ni (Exequiel) Biteng,” added the Mapua mentor.
Co also mentioned that Lady Luck was already on JRU’s side in the last stretch.
“Lahat na lang ng mga Hail Mary shots nila pumasok e. Puro Hail Mary shots, wala na kaming magagawa,” he said.
The Mapua tactician for now just wanted his wards to learn from this loss and hopefully mature.
“Ito ang pinakamahirap ang maturity, di ba? Ang tingin ko kulang pa ang ibang players sa maturity. Yung sa end game na composed at focused ka. E ang nagyari nara-rattle,“ he said. “Yun ang mahirap na gawin ngayon during this season is all you wanna say is sana they learn from their mistakes.”
“The more na hesitant kang mag-commit, the more na lalo kang magi-error. It’s better to decide on something to do rather than not doing anything, right?”
