OVER-COMING THROUGH. Without Scottie Thompson, other Perpetual players picked up the slack to keep their team in third place.
All was ripe for another shocker in the NCAA 91 Basketball Tournament, but University of Perpetual Help persevered despite the loss of their leader and withstood the fightback of their upset-conscious opponents.
Scottie Thompson was sent back to the locker room because of an ankle sprain in the final frame, but the other Altas pulled together to push off the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals, 68-55 on Tuesday at the San Juan Arena.
Perpetual was nursing an advantage for majority of the game and was still ahead, 53-41, inside the last seven minutes before an ankle sprain took down Thompson. The Generals scored six unanswered points to threaten at 47-53, but the Altas then countered with seven straight points to re-establish a 60-47 lead with 4:04 remaining.
EAC was unable to decrease the deficit as Prince Eze, Kevin Oliveria, and Gab Dagangon all scored six points in the endgame to raise Perpetual’s card to 6-2. Eze ended with 17 points and eight rebounds while Thompson collected four points, eight assists, and 12 rebounds before leaving the game.
Talking about how his boys pulled through, coach Aric del Rosario said in his post-game conference, “Mahirap manado sa NCAA. Pero kahit anong gawin ng EAC, nakatayo pa rin kami.”
Francis Munsayac scored 18 points to lead the effort for the Generals who dropped to 2-6.
