TEYTEY TAKEOVER: A tale of victory and defeat
STONE COLD STUNNER. No one at the San Juan Arena could believe that JRU overhauled an 18-point deficit in the last four minutes to come away with a win.

Trailing by 18 points down inside the last four minutes, nobody expected Jose Rizal University to emerge as victors over Mapua Institute of Technology.

“I thought it wasn’t possible. I couldn’t believe it,” Cardinals’ reinforcement Allwell Oraeme begrudgingly told ABS-CBN Sports. The season hosts have already had a few games wherein they let a double-digit lead slip, but they still found a way to come out on top in the end..

Last Tuesday was a completely different story, however, especially with a smoking Teytey Teodoro on the other side. When everyone else seemed to have lost faith in the Bombers, the second-year guard remained persistent.

“Pagkatapos ‘nung back-to-back three points ko, tiningnan ko shot clock tapos yung score. May six o seven minutes pa, sabi ko kaya pa,” he said. Then, Teytey proved he was a man of his word.

JRU admitted to being passive and relaxed at the beginning, knowing that Josan Nimes and CJ Isit were sitting out of the game. On the other hand, Allwell believed Mapua took the game for granted thinking that they already had it.

During the crucial moments, the Bombers had Teytey to take over. “Yung na-miss ko yung foul shot, inis na inis ako. Sa huddle, sabi ko akin na yung bola. Inangkin ko na yung bola at yung tira. Kahit anong mangyari, manalo o matalo, akin yun,”  he said.

The Cardinals unfortunately didn’t have a similar person to go to. Asked if the absence of their two seniors was a big factor, Allwell answered in the affirmative as he said, talking about Nimes and Isit, “They take control of the game in this situation. I tried to play every minute of the game, I tried my best to fill in, but it was difficult.”

Cardinals head coach Atoy Co told his boys that the game was a test of character and they just fell a bit short. Conversely, while coach Vergel Meneses lauded JRU’s comeback effort, he definitely wasn’t happy they had to come back at all as he said,  “Medyo hindi makapaniwala na nangyari yun. Pinaka-ayoko yung naghahabol e.”

Teytey added, “Siyempre nakahinga kami nang malalim pagkatapos, pero dapat kasi simula palang pinukpok na namin sila. Hindi na ulit ito pwede mangyari.”
