POWER PLAY. Ola Adeogun turned in his strongest performance of the season to power San Beda to a share of first-place.
San Beda College was coasting its way towards a share of the top spot in the 91st Season of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.
The Red Lions stumbled for a while in the final frame, but had Ola Adeogun raise them right back up for a 92-81 victory against the gutsy San Sebastian College-Recoletos Golden Stags on Thursday at the San Juan Arena.
The five-peat champions coasted towards a comfortable 78-61 lead entering the fourth until San Sebastian held them scoreless for six minutes. At the other end, the Stags tallied 16 unanswered points to close the gap to 77-78 before Adeogun finally ended the Lions’ drought for a 80-77 score.
Michael Calisaan again had San Sebastian near to a solitary point, but San Beda used a 12-2 finishing kick to seal their seventh victory in eight games. Talking about the exciting final frame, coach Jamike Jarin said in his post-game conference, “You can't afford to put your guard down. We just told the boys to keep playing.”
Adeogun ended with a season-high 28 points to go along with 14 rebounds while Art dela Cruz chipped in 13 points, nine rebounds, and five assists.
Ryan Costelo had 18 points and eight rebounds to front the Stags’ final push that ran out of gas. The loss sent the Recto-based squad to 2-7 to end the first round.
