Big man problem haunts JRU

Jose Rizal coach Vergel Meneses acknowledges the fact they need to squeeze more from their big men after an inconsistent performance in the first round.
Teytey Teodoro can only do so much for Jose Rizal University.
At 5-foot-10, the Heavy Bombers' guard stood tall, scoring 28 points for JRU at the end of their first round campaign in the 91st NCAA seniors basketball competition.
But even his high-scoring performance was not enough to save the Bombers from Perpetual Help Altas and its behemoth Bright Akhuetie.
He and JRU needed help under the basket, nobody heeded the call.
JRU closed the first round with a stinging 83-86 overtime loss on Tuesday and slid to a 5-4 win-loss record.
"Medyo di maganda ang first round namin," Teodoro told ABS-CBN Sports. "Siguro sa second round kailangan talaga naming mag-double effort."
He admitted that the team received a tongue-lashing from coach Vergel Meneses.
"Galit sa amin lalo na sa mga big man. Yun e talagang kinain sila ni Akhuetie."
The 6-foot-8 Perpetual import Akhuetie bullied his way to a 31-point, 12-rebound outing against JRU’s big men Abdul AbdulWahab and Abdoul Poutouochi.
The duo combined for a paltry nine points and 15 rebounds.
"Siguro naging problema namin sa big man. Nag-collapse kami sa big man," Teodoro said. "Siguro yung depensa namin sa ilalim especially sa big man (ang problema). Kasi kadalasan doon kami natatalo."
Meneses gave credit to Perpetual’s game but also pointed out their own shortcomings.
"Kanina they really worked hard for that yung Perpetual," Meneses said. "We cannot defend their big guy. Let’s give credit to them na talagang, they never gave up. Good execution when they needed it most. Kami we cannot buy a basket nu’ng last minute ng overtime."
For now the mentor wanted his team to learn from their mistakes and improve going into the final push for a spot in the Final Four.
"We have to be consistent on playing defense. Parang we’re up by a big margin then they call a time and we relaxed. We cannot be like that," the coach said.
