FINISHING THE JOB. Ryan Costelo's unbelievable shot was the reason San Sebastian beat Letran after just falling short in the first round.
San Sebastian College-Recoletos was down by one with 17 seconds to go and head coach Rodney Santos went to Ryan Costelo instead of Jamil Ortuoste to get their third win in the 91st Season of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.
The second-year guard went at the defense of Colegio de San Juan de Letran and just found a small opening in between the outstretched arms of Rey Nambatac and Kevin Racal to launch a prayer that found the bottom of the net as the Golden Stags downed the Knights, 89-87, on Tuesday at the San Juan Arena.
San Sebastian turned a 66-77 deficit into an 83-80 advantage inside the last 90 seconds. Mark Cruz and Jamil Ortuoste then traded baskets to send the score at 86-85 for the Stags before Kevin Racal’s putback took an 87-86 lead for the Knights with 16.9 remaining.
It was at that point that Costelo drove into the lane and converted what proved to be the game-winner as at the other end, Cruz lost possession just as he was about to shoot. A free throw line split by Michael Calisaan followed by a three-point miss by Rey Nambatac sealed the final score.
Calisaan showed the way with 27 points and 10 rebounds while Ortuoste added 19 markers. The Recto-based squad was also on its way into an upset before Cruz rescued Letran in their first meeting.
Talking about finishing the job this time around, head coach Rodney Santos said in his post-game conference, “Sabi ko sa kanila, ‘Panalo tayo last game. Patunayan natin ngayon.’”
Cruz scored 30 points which fell short in preventing the Knights from falling into a first-place tie at 8-2.
