Siguro hindi naman ako naglaro para i-compare (kay Jiovani) kanina. Gusto ko lang talagang manalo --- Paolo Pontejos
Jose Rizal University guard Paolo Pontejos was pitted against one of the best backcourt general in the league.
The Heavy Bomber went toe-to-toe with Arellano University point guard Jiovani Jalalon in a shootout that lasted for 50 minutes and Pontejos outshone the national team standout in JRU’s 114-112 double-overtime win against the Chiefs.
Pontejos exploded with 32 points and spiked his performance with eight assists, four rebounds and two steals for the Heavy Bombers to tie their victim at 6-4 card.
He shot 15-of-22 from the field including three triples in 26 minutes of play.
But the graduating player was quick to play down the rivalry between the two guards.
“Siguro hindi naman ako naglaro para i-compare (kay Jiovani) kanina. Gusto ko lang talagang manalo,” he said.
Pontejos shone the brightest in the fourth quarter and in the two overtimes with 20 points including six in the final five minutes.
“Nagulat lang ako kasi pagod na talaga ako noon e,” he added. “Siguro every possession counts pagdating sa mga ganoong game and kompiyansa lang din. Kailangan lang din naming manalo.”
Jalalon poured in 36 points on 11-of-27 clip on the floor with 7-of-8 from the line.
The Gilas cadet, who won gold in the Singapore Southeast Asian Games last June, had 16 assists, seven rebounds and two steals before fouling out in the last 1.4 seconds of the second overtime.
His foul gave Gio Lasquety two free throws to seal the win that Arellano put under protest.
