No Josan Nimes, no problem.
The Mapua Cardinals weathered Perpetual Help’s fight back in the final stretch and held on for a 70-65 win on Thursday sans Nimes and two other injured stars in the 91st NCAA Seniors basketball competition at The Arena in San Juan.
“Finally Lady Luck smiled on us,” said Cardinals coach Atoy Co after Mapua evened its record to 5-5.
Allwell Oraeme posted a double-double with 19 points and 15 rebounds to pace Mapua, which is down to only ten players with Nimes (hamstring), CJ Isit (elbow) and Andretti Stevens (knee) sidelined with injuries.
Exequiel Biteng scored 12 points while Justin Serrano had 11 markers for the Cardinals.
“I’m so happy that even without my superstars we we’re able to pull through which means lang na as long as thy will follow the system. The way how their coaches are teaching them how to play basketball, I think we have a good chance,” added Co.
Perpetual narrowed their 59-42 deficit at the start of the fourth period to 68-65 with only 45.1 seconds remaining on a Bright Akhuetie basket.
The Altas had a chance of drew closer but Denniel Aguirre scored on a broken play after picking up the ball saved by Serrano after a footrace for the loose ball with Perpetual’s Gabriel Dagangon with less than 10 seconds remaining.
Akhuetie finished with 18 points and nine rebounds, Earl Thompson had a quiet 14 markers and seven boards while Dagangon had 11 for Perpetual, which played catch up the whole game, never tasted the lead and fell to its third loss in 10 games.
