ABOUT TIME. Art Dela Cruz has been the most consistent MVP contender, but this week's individual plum is only his first.
Arthur dela Cruz wants to end his collegiate career with an MVP award and another championship for San Beda.
He's on track of achieving both.
Dela Cruz came through with near triple-double performances recently to power the Lions to a pair of victories and into a share of the lead with the Letran Knights in the 91st NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
He dropped 30 points and had 10 rebounds, five assists and four steals on Emilio Aguinaldo in a 96-84 win last Tuesday and churned out 17 points, 10 boards and seven dimes in an 89-63 rout the next few days as San Beda improved to 9-2 (win-loss).
It also clinched dela Cruz ACCEL Quantum/3XVI-NCAA Press Corps Player of the Week honors.
"My goal is, of course, to give the school another championship before I leave them," said dela Cruz, who was drafted ninth overall by Blackwater in this year's PBA rookie draft.
"If I will be given a chance to the win the MVP award, it will be an added blessing," he added.
And dela Cruz is on course of snaring his first MVP title as he's currently running second behind MVP statistical leader Allwell Oraeme of Mapua after he averaged in the top five of three categories--20.36 points (second), 12.09 boards (fourth) and 6.09 assists (third).
Truly, dela Cruz has been San Beda's anchor while teammates Ola Adeogun struggles and Baser Amer is recuperating from a dislocated shoulder.
Dela Cruz beat Letran's Mark Cruz and Lyceum's Cameroonian big man Jean Victor Nguidjol for the weekly plum sponsored by ACCEL Quantum and 3XVI.
