RETURN OF THE COMEBACK. As if they needed to, San Beda got even stronger with the return of their lead guard.
Baser Amer finally returned to action for the first time since July 18 in the 91st Season in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.
The PBA-bound court general entered at the 8:32 mark in the second quarter of San Beda College’s matchup against Jose Rizal University on Thursday at the San Juan Arena. Sharing his feelings once he entered the playing court for the first time in nearly two months, Amer told reporters, “Sobrang saya. Na-miss kong maglaro at yung mga kasama ko.”
While the Red Lions’ lead guard was relishing his return, his head coach said he was at the edge of his seat for all of the 22 minutes he was on the floor. “My heart was pounding every second he was on the court,” Jamike Jarin said.
Thankfully, Amer came out all right to end with five assists and four assists. Although scoreless, it was his court general’s intangibles that Jarin loved seeing back on the court as he said, “Yung winning attitude lang niya, you can't coach that.”
According to Jarin, San Beda had always set Amer’s return for the third game in the second round. As such, the lead guard shared he had been ready for a long time for his return by saying, “Sabi talaga nila, dito ka ibabalik so mindset ko is ready na.”
Amer’s mindset was all set, but his body is yet to be fully healthy. “Continue pa rin therapy ko kasi 90 percent pa lang ako,” he said.
Fully healthy or not, the Red Lions’ court general said he was going to end his NCAA career by giving all he had. “Last year ko na ‘to. Gusto ko maging special,” he said.
