WARNING. Mark Cruz seems to be making a statement in averaging 28 points in the three games since getting drafted in the third round of the PBA Draft.
It should not even be surprising anymore that Mark Cruz put Colegio de San Juan de Letran on his back and carried them to another victory in the 91st Season of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.
“Ant-man,” fondly called as such for his heroic game despite the diminutive stature, launched five long-range bombs over the outstretched arms of various defenders as part of a decisive run that turned a 49-50 deficit into a 72-53 lead the Knights kept until the final buzzer. All in all, Cruz drilled eight triples – the most of anyone so far in the season.
The Letran lead guard has gone berserk in the second round, turning in 30, 29, and 26-point performances in a row. Interestingly, the second round of the NCAA started right after Cruz was selected in the third round of the 2015 PBA Draft.
Was “Ant-man” making some sort of a statement? “Siguro, nasasabay na rin,” he told ABS-CBN Sports.
He was quick to add, however, “Pero ang iniisip ko lang naman talaga is ilaro yung best ko. Buti napapakita naman.”
The fifth-year Knight also credited first year head coach Aldin Ayo for putting complete trust in him and all his teammates. “Lagi akong sinasabihan ni coach na let it fly lang,” he said.
Prodded again if his 28-point average in the last three games is a kind of a warning for all the professional teams that passed on him, Cruz chose to stay modest, ‘’Di naman. ‘Di na lang. Wino-work out ko lang talaga yung shooting ko. Kelagan ko kasi maging consistent.”
