SHUT DOWN. Teytey Teodoro had no attempts in the last three minutes.
The contest in the second round of the NCAA 91 Men’s Basketball Tournament between Mapua Institute of Technology and Jose Rizal University was looking to be a repeat of their first encounter.
Teytey Teodoro came alive once more in the final frame, but the Cardinals denied him the touches in the last three minutes to come away with a 68-67 victory on Tuesday at the San Juan Arena.
Mapua led, 51-42, early in the fourth before Teodoro poured in all but four points in a 20-8 surge that took the lead for the Bombers, 62-59, inside the last three minutes. From that point, however, Teodoro was no longer able to put up any shot as Darell Menina and CJ Isit stepped up the defensive pressure.
Still, JRU managed to stay ahead 67-65 and looked headed towards the win with Paolo Pontejos deflecting a triple try by JP Nieles until Mark Brana recovered the ball and was fouled after sending the followup to the bottom of the net.
Now down by one with 5.9 remaining, Teodoro was still unable to touch the ball and it was Ervin Grospe’s in-and-out fadeaway that became the Bombers’ final attempt. In their first round meeting, Teodoro made the game-winning layup against Allwell Oraeme.
Coach Atoy Co wasn’t particularly thrilled about the Cardinals’ escape that moved them to solo fifth at 7-5. “We were just lucky. We were lucky the last shot was short,” he said in his post-game conference.
Oraeme led the way for Mapua with 19 points and 27 rebounds while Brana and Exe Biteng added 12 apiece.
Teodoro had all but two of his 18 points in the fourth, but none in the last three minutes as JRU dropped to 6-6.
