LIKE A DIAMOND. Bright Akhuetie said he will never lose being Bright.
University of Perpetual Help’s rising star Bright Akhuetie is making a name for himself in the 91st Season of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Pacing the Altas in scoring (21.3) and rebounding (12.4) while also making the All-Star squad, the Nigerian has more than fulfilled the preseason hype that surrounded him and – yes, pun intended – is definitely shining bright.
While his surname definitely sounds foreign to Filipino ears, his first name definitely isn't. Surprisingly, “Bright” isn't a nickname or a term of endearment which stuck. As he told ABS-CBN Sports while chuckling, “That's just the name my parents gave me.”
Pressed about the matter, the Perpetual rising star said he really didn't have an explanation. “I was just born Bright,” he quipped.
He then wryly continued, “It's because I'm smart. That is something you don't lose.”
Turning to serious matters, however, the always modest Akhuetie deflected all the praise he has been receiving back to his teammates. “It's just basketball. It's not just for myself, but for the team. It's a team effort,” he said.
