It is rare to have a basketball legend and a coach become a fan of his own protégé.
Such is the case of Arellano University coach Jerry Codinera, who admitted that sometimes he just couldn’t help but be amazed with his guard Jiovani Jalalon.
The third year playmaker logged in his third triple-double of the season in the Chiefs’ 86-76 win over San Sebastian Stags Friday in the 91st NCAA seniors basketball competition at The Arena in San Juan.
“For a college player like that (posting a triple-double) parang minsan parang fan na lang ako ni Jiovani,” said Codinera, a PBA legend known for his intense defense.
Jalalon registered 18 points, 10 rebounds and season-high 17 assists in the Chiefs’ 10th win in 14 games and pushed Arellano’s winning run to three.
“Nagiging fan na lang talaga ako. Sabi ko kasi kaya naman niya e, he can do it,” Codinera added.
Overall, Jalalon is a couple of triple-double behind reigning Most Valuable Player Scottie Thompson of Perpetual Help’s five.
Incidentally, Jalalon’s second triple-double this season was against Perpetual where Thompson, his teammate in the national team that won gold in the Singapore Southeast Asian Games last June, logged in his last.
The pride of Cagayan De Oro, now fifth in the MVP race, said that it was never his intention to fill up the stats sheet.
For him, he is just reaping the rewards of his hardwork.
