Paolo Pontejos led Jose Rizal University's assault in a walk in the park win over Emilio Aguinaldo College.
Jose Rizal University fueled its Final Four bid with an 87-64 rout of a languid Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals side and arrested a two-game slide Friday in the 91st NCAA seniors basketball competition at The Arena in San Juan.
Paolo Pontejos finished with 21 points on a 9-of-17 clip from the field while Teyey Teodoro and John Gorospe scored 13 markers each for JRU, which is still outside of the top four heading deeper into the eliminations. Mark Neil Cruz had 11 points.
“Mabuting nakakuha kami ng panalo kaya lang di rin nakakatulong yung results ng (ibang mga) games. Isipin lang ng mga bata na maka-(winning) streak at huwag nang isipin ang ibang reults ng ibang team,” said JRU coach Vergel Meneses.
The Heavy Bombers blitzed the Generals from the get-go with torrid shooting for a 25-7 first quarter lead that ballooned to 42-18 heading into the half before JRU cruised in the second half for 7-6 win-loss record at sixth place.
It was total domination for JRU not yielding the lead nor letting EAC knot the game.
“Morale-booster ang resulta namin going into the College of St. Benilde game,” added Meneses of the rout.
Sidney Onwubere finished with 21 points and nine boards while Laminou Hamadou had a double-double of 10 markers and 11 rebounds for the also-ran Generals which is still heading south with a 2-11 slate.
