JRU keeps semis hope alive
Teytey Teodoro of Jose Rizal University takes the winning layup after stealing the ball away from Travis Jonson of College of St. Benilde.

Teytey Teodoro struggled from the field but provided the winning play in the last 15.8 seconds to keep Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers’ Final Four bid alive, hurdling the upset conscious College of St. Benilde Blazers, 73-69, Tuesday in the NCAA seniors basketball competition at The Arena in San Juan.

The stubby JRU point guard stripped the ball away from a cold-playing Travis Jonson with the Bombers protecting a two-point lead for the winning layup – the game’s last field goal.

Teodoro finished with 17 points on a 5-of-13 field goal clip with six rebounds, three assists and two steals for JRU’s eighth win in 14 games at sixth spot.

Paolo Pontejos and starting center Abdoul Poutouochi scored 13 points each while Marco Balagtas and John Gorospe added 10 markers for the Bombers’ second win in a row. Poutouochi lorded over the boards with 15 rebounds.

"Medyo lumilinaw (ang chance sa semis) but we need to win more, mga four more games. I know it will be very hard for us but lagi naman ang JRU laging nasa situation na ganyan," said JRU coach Vergel Meneses. "One game at a time lang. Try to win the next game then saka na isipin yung susunod na game."

Jonathan Grey poured in 34 points with seven rebounds, four assists and a steal for the Blazers, which gave JRU a hard time the whole game.

"Nothing to lose sila e. Kapag wala kang pressure ang sarap maglaro," Meneses added.

Grey’s trey put CSB up, 67-66, with only 2:04 remaining but Teodoro engineered a give-and-go play for Gorospe after a JRU timeout.

Gorospe sank two charities for the Bombers’ 70-67 lead with 38.3 left before JJ Domingpo scored from a bank shot runner for the Blazers. Teodoro split his freebies from the line before poking the ball away from Jonson and scoring.

Jeffrey Ongtenco finished with 10 markers while Ralph Deles got seven for the 3-11 Blazers.
