BACK ON TOP. Art Dela Cruz and San Beda are once again tied for first place with Letran after a bounce back win.
Vic Nguidjol delivered the inarguable top play of the week, but it was San Beda College that was in complete control all throughout Thursday at the San Juan Arena.
On the back of an offense that made 46 percent of its shots, the Red Lions cruised to a 87-80 triumph over the Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates and moved into a tie for first in the NCAA 91 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
San Beda broke the game wide open via a 32-point second quarter that turned a 17-15 lead into a 49-31 advantage at the half. The Pirates trimmed the deficit to as little as six a couple of times from there, but the five-peat champions responded with 8-0 and 8-2 runs to re-establish a comfortable margin.
Art Dela Cruz turned in another all-around stat line of 25 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Talking about the win that moved them back to first place with a 11-3 record, coach Jamike Jarin said, “We don’t look at who’s ahead, who’s behind. We’re looking at our preparation.”
The LPU effort was fronted by Wilson Baltazar and Joseph Gabayni’s 28 and 24 points, respectively. Nguidjol also completed a powerful alley-oop when the Pirates’ 12th defeat in 15 tries was all but sealed.
