Another Thompson triple-double keeps Altas in top four
NO SURPRISES HERE. Scottie Thompson got his sixth triple-double of the season as Perpetual took care of business against CSB.

In a crucial gameday Friday, University of Perpetual Help left nothing to chance and took care of business all over the San Juan Arena.

Scottie Thompson claimed his sixth triple-double of the season, but it was the Altas’ defense which energized their 70-47 wire-to-wire win – their 10th in 14 games in the NCAA 91 Men’s Basketball Tournament – this time against the College of St. Benilde Blazers.

While Perpetual led right from tip-off, it wasn’t until Prince Eze’s entry that they dominated. With the six-foot 10-inch in the middle of the lane, the Blazers only mustered three points compared to their opponents’ 19 in the first eight minutes.

Still with their Nigerian tower altering shots, the Altas allowed only eight more points in the next 10 minutes as their advantage increased to as much as 38-11 with 2:22 left in the first half. If not for JJ Domingo’s four-point play to beat the buzzer, Perpetual’s output would have doubled CSB’s.

The Blazers cut their disadvantage to 46-58 with three minutes remaining in the game, but Bright Akhuetie responded by pounding in five points in a 10-0 charge that finished the job. “Mahirap matalo dun sa ilalim kasi mahihila ka talaga pababa,” coach Aric del Rosario said in his post-game conference.

Thompson ended with 21 points, 10 assists, and 10 rebounds as Perpetual allowed only five of their opponents to score while limiting them to 26 percent shooting.

Domingo was the lone bright spot for now 3-12 CSB, finishing with 12 markers to his name. Jonathan Grey scored 14 points, but missed 11 of his 15 shots while also committing five turnovers.
