LEADING BY EXAMPLE. Paolo Pontejos said he wants to take charge even more with JRU chasing a spot in the Final Four.
After propelling Jose Rizal University past erstwhile leader Colegio de San Juan de Letran on Friday, veteran gunslinger Paolo Pontejos received some sort of praise from the head coach who characteristically keeps his wards on a leash.
“Andun na yung game niya. He just needs to be consistent,” Vergel Meneses told reporters.
The Heavy Bombers’ mentor was referring to Pontejos’ stellar play in the second round where he has scored more than 20 points off the bench in all but one in a total of six outings. In their defeat of the Knights, it was also Pontejos who sparked their decisive run via a gorgeous stepback three.
Asked what changed and led to his resurgence, the veteran gunslinger told ABS-CBN Sports, “Mali nga kasi dapat simula pa lang, ganito na ako maglaro.”
He then continued, “Nung first round, tinitignan ko lang flow ng team. Ngayon, kulang na yun e. Kelangan ko mag-step up talaga.”
Moreover, Pontejos shared that he realized he needs to exert more effort in terms of leadership with relatively young JRU chasing a spot in the Final Four. “Kelangan kong ipakita yung leadership sa loob. Kapag wala si Teytey (Teodoro), ako ang kelangan mag-take charge.”
