SPOILER ALERT. San Sebastian has now felled league-leaders San Beda and Letran in the second round.
San Sebastian College-Recoletos has long been eliminated from contention in the 91st Season of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, but that isn’t stopping them from playing their best basketball this late in the season.
Bradwyn Guinto posted 26 points and nine rebounds to wrest control of the inside away from Ola Adeogun before Ryan Costelo’s steady hand at the line delivered the Golden Stags a 98-92 win against the San Beda College Red Lions on Tuesday at the San Juan Arena.
The old-time rivals stood level at 83 inside the last four minutes until an interior basket from Guinto capped off an 8-0 charge that gave San Sebastian a 91-83 advantage.
Back-to-back hits from Art Dela Cruz and Adeogun closed the Lions to only four points behind, but Costelo missed all but one of his six free throws and the Stags only allowed one more bucket to keep the lead the rest of the way.
Guinto led five other players in double-digit scoring for now 5-10 San Sebastian who own a couple of second round wins against two of the three league-leading teams. “Wala kaming go-to-guy rito. Lahat, gumagawa,” coach Rodney Santos said in his post-game conference.
San Beda fell to a three-way tie for first place at 11-4 despite the best efforts of Dela Cruz who turned in his second triple-double of the season with 30 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists. Adeogun has 17 points and 10 rebounds of his own, but was unable to contain Guinto.
