HIGHER AND HIGHER. Another triple-double for Scottie Thompson, another win for Perpetual who look to be peaking at the right time.

Nearing the end of the elimination round in the NCAA 91 Men’s Basketball Tournament, University of Perpetual Help now has 11 wins and Scottie Thompson now has seven triple-doubles.

Tuesday at the San Juan Arena was just another day in the office for “Mr. Triple-Double” who collected 10 points, 13 assists, and 14 rebounds in only 31 minutes to lead the Altas past the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals, 89-59.

Thompson already had six points, seven assists, and six rebounds right around halftime, but the Generals were still in the game, only down 30-39. In the third quarter, however, Perpetual switched on all cylinders for a massive 29-4 burst that turned a 45-37 lead into a 74-41 advantage in the middle of the final frame.

The game was all but over at that point until EAC’s Max Diego took a hard bump from Alta Nikko Cabiltes and the two nearly came to blows with Diego’s teammate Raymond Pascua also entering the fray. Fortunately, referees took control of the situation and all three were sent back to the locker room.

Gerald Dizon added a career-high 18 points and six assists to help carry Perpetual into a three-way for first place with San Beda College and Colegio de San Juan de Letran at 11-4. Asked if a twice-to-beat advantage is their goal, coach Aric del Rosario said, “Yun ang pangarap ko. Sa nakaraang tatlong taon, laging pang-apat e.”

Christ Mejos has 13 points to front the effort for the Generals who dropped to 2-13.
