MUCH-WELCOMED WIN. Jonathan Grey has clearly shown his determination to grab another win in his last games in the collegiate arena.
Up against a team that had just humbled the five-time defending champions, College of St. Benilde delivered their own kind of upset in the 91st Season of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Jonathan Grey scorched the nets for 25 points and the Blazers trumped the San Sebastian College-Recoletos Golden Stags, 69-62, on Thursday at the San Juan Arena.
CSB broke the game open when JR Ongteco and JJ Domingo scored 13 of their 29 points in the third quarter to nearly outproduce all of their opponents who only had 15 of their own. Leading 51-45 to start the final frame, Grey then made sure the Blazers stayed ahead for good by pouring in 12 points in the last 10 minutes.
The Blazers pounced on their opponents’ errors by scoring 28 points off 24 turnovers en route to their fourth win in 16 games. Talking about the graduating star clearly wanting to close out his collegiate career with a bang, coach Gabby Velasco said, “He really played his heart out kahit pagod na siya.”
Bradwyn Guinto had 19 points and 14 rebounds to show the way for San Sebastian for the second straight game, but his teammates were unable to replicate their effort in their wins against Letran and San Beda. The loss sent the Stags to 5-11.
