Pontejos makes sure Bombers remain in playoff hunt
KEEP THE FAITH. JRU has won four consecutive do-or-die games.

The gas tank of the Heavy Bombers is proving to be far from empty.

Paolo Pontejos outscored University of Perpetual Help all by his lonesome in the third quarter and Jose Rizal University ultimately outlasted the Altas, 62-60, on Friday at the San Juan Arena.

The Bombers fell victim to their opponents’ balanced attack after the initial two quarters, trailing 38-26 until Pontejos found his range. The fourth-year guard rained down 16 points in the third, individually outgunning Perpetual who only had 14, to give JRU a 55-52 lead entering the fourth.

The Altas went on a 7-1 run to retake the lead early in the fourth before the Bombers countered with their own 6-1 run that proved to be the final score just inside the last three minutes. A putback by Ervin Grospe with 2:58 remaining became the game-winning shot as both teams battled to a standstill for the remainder of the game.

Pontejos ended with 19 points and Abdel Poutouochi contributed a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double in the Bombers’ fourth win in a row in a do-or-die game. At 10-6, JRU is currently tied for fifth and sixth with Mapua Institute of Technology.

Talking about both their hard-earned win and their quest for the Final Four, coach Vergel Meneses said, “Mas masarap talaga siguro yung pinaghihirapan.”

Scottie Thompson had 12 points, six assists, and 11 rebounds for Perpetual who dropped to 11-5.
