ASCENT. With a fifth consecutive victory, JRU rose from a three-way logjam for fourth towards a two-way tie for third.
Just like that, from outside the top five, Jose Rizal University has kicked down the door and entered into a tie for third and fourth nearing the end of the elimination round in the NCAA 91 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
The Heavy Bombers won their fifth do-or-die game in the row, this time against the Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates, 64-55, on Tuesday at the San Juan Arena.
The surging Shaw Boulevard-based squad led from start to finish as Teytey Teodoro scorched the nets once more with 32 points. The sophomore’s career-high matching output almost equaled, by himself, the total of the Pirate starters.
LPU attempted a rally and cut the deficit to just 48-51 in the fourth, but a personal 5-0 run by Teodoro swung the momentum back in the Bombers’ favor. JRU did not look back from there to ascend to 11-6 – tied with University of Perpetual Help inside the top four.
Vic Nguidjol and Joseph Gabayni had 13 and 11 points, respectively, for the Pirates who sunk to 4-13.
