PARTY CRASHERS. San Sebastian's victims in the second round include the current top three teams: Colegio de San Juan de Letran, San Beda College, and University of Perpetual Help.
Already eliminated from contention in the NCAA 91 Men’s Basketball Tournament, San Sebastian College-Recoletos is still coming for more and more and more.
With University of Perpetual Help rushing towards a win that would secure at least an eliminator for a playoff berth, Jamil Ortuoste and Bradwyn Guinto stood in the way and the Golden Stags stopped the Altas dead in their tracks, 91-87, on Tuesday at the San Juan Arena.
The Las Pinas-based squad’s party is the latest San Sebastian crashed following similar upsets against current top two teams Colegio de San Juan de Letran and San Beda College. Once more, old reliables Ortuoste and Guinto showed the way to overcome reigning MVP Scottie Thompson’s eighth triple-double of the season.
The Stags got left behind early, 0-10, but managed to recover as Ortuoste stroked the nets for 19 points in the first three quarters for a 61-57 edge. Another long-distance shot by Ortuoste then gave the Recto-based team their biggest lead at 64-57 to start the fourth.
Still, the Altas did not give up and trimmed their deficit to only 82-83 inside the last two minutes before Guinto and Michael Calisaan’s back-to-back hits gave San Sebastian more breathing room, 87-82. Thompson then converted a quick basket, but Guinto and Calisaan made all four of their free throws to ice the game for the Stags.
“As much as possible, I want to end this tournament on a winning note. We try to maintain the good attitude and the positive habits,” coach Rodney Santos said in his post-game conference. Santos’ wards clearly listened to him as Ortuoste scored a season-high 27 points while Guinto had a 25-point, 11-rebound double-double in San Sebastian’s sixth triumph in 17 tries.
Perpetual lost for the second time in a row to fall to 11-6 despite the best efforts of Thompson who ended with 15 points, 12 assists, and 15 rebounds.
