IN THE NICK OF TIME. With one game left in the season, CSB is suddenly streaking.
With nothing to play for but pride, College of St. Benilde is playing their best basketball in the 91st Season of the UAAP Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Thanks to a much welcome outburst from Gerard Castor, the Blazers earned their first winning streak of the season at the expense of the Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates, 59-56, on Thursday at the San Juan Arena.
LPU nudged ahead in a low-scoring first quarter, 12-9, until Castor’s buzzer-beating heave from the other side of the court capped off a 20-point second period for the Blazers which ultimately created the distance between the two teams.
Leading 59-54 with only 31.2 ticks on the clock, JJ Domingo granted their opponents a golden opportunity by fouling Shaq Alanes then incurring a technical after. However, Alanes only converted two of his four free throws and then committed a backing violation in the ensuing inbound play.
Castor started in place of usual pointman Travis Jonson and made a good account of himself with a total of 14 points, nine rebounds, and three assists. “It was good that Castor was there today because we really struggled with the guard position in the season,” coach Gabby Velasco said.
Joseph Gabayni turned in a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double as another loss ended the Pirates’ season at 4-14.
