UPWARD TRAJECTORY. Mapua has only lost once through eight games in the second round.
Of the six squads still alive in the NCAA 91 Men’s Basketball Tournament, Mapua Institute of Technology had the easiest slate of last two games – both coming against teams no longer with anything to play for.
They needed almost three quarters to do so, but the Cardinals kept their playoff fate in their hands after outgunning the College of St. Benilde Blazers, 77-72, on Tuesday at the San Juan Arena.
For the second time in a row, Darell Menina scorched the nets for 17 points built on three triples as Mapua barged their way into the four-team logjam at 11-6. “At least, isa na lang kelangan pa naming trabahuin,” coach Atoy Co said in his post-game conference.
With their star playing in his last game in the collegiate ranks, the Blazers played an inspired two and a half quarters and even took the lead, 42-41, until coach Atoy Co subbed in Menina and Josan Nimes. The hotshot duo combined for 14 points in a 19-6 outburst that sent the Cardinals up, 60-48, early in the fourth.
The margin proved to be enough for the season hosts.
Grey turned in a forgettable final outing with only four points as the Blazers ended the tournament with a 5-13 record.
