ALIVE AND KICKING. With an 8-1 record in the second round, Mapua's season is far from over.
Mapua Institute of Technology kept their stellar run in the second round of the NCAA 91 Men’s Basketball Tournament going, and in doing so, kept themselves alive and kicking for a Final Four slot.
With an eliminating loss very much possible, the Cardinals blasted off 47 points in the second half to run away from the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals, 88-63, on Friday at the San Juan Arena.
Darell Menina and Mark Brana combined for 21 of their 28 points in the second half to power Mapua to their 12th win in 18 games which assures them of at least an eliminator for a playoff spot. With his boys completing an 8-1 second round record, coach Atoy Co credited their defensive effort as he said, “In any basketball (game), depensa talaga.”
Indeed, the Cardinals only allowed 15 points in the second half after surrendering 38 in the first two quarters. The season hosts also forced 29 turnovers and immediately converted them into 28 points.
EAC finished the season on an 11-game losing skid coming from a 2-5 standing.
