SKY HIGH. JRU is the hottest team in the league after winning their sixth game in a row.
In order to move onto the next round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, Jose Rizal University needed to sweep their remaining six games.
On Friday at the San Juan Arena, the Heavy Bombers completed their task and are on their way to at least an eliminator for a playoff slot after dominating the San Sebastian College-Recoletos Golden Stags, 91-69.
Entering the playoffs, Vergel Meneses’ boys are the hottest team in the league with a six-game winning streak and it’s all because they have gone all-out with their effort. “Sabi ko lang sa kanila, more effort, more chances of winning, less effort, less chances of winning,” Meneses said in his post-game conference.
The Stags came into the game having already claimed upset wins against Letran, San Beda, and Perpetual, but Paolo Pontejos took care of business for JRU right from tip-off. The sweet-shooting guard scored all but five of his points in the first half to pace the Bombers to the lead they kept until the final buzzer.
Playing in his final collegiate game, Bradwyn Guinto had his usual 14-point, 12-rebound double-double to lead the effort for San Sebastian who ended the season at 6-12.
