MOTHER KNOWS BEST. Paolo Pontejos said that his mommy's constant reminders have kept him on point in the second round.
Paolo Pontejos was a mere spectator in the Teytey-keover in the first round.
With Teytey Teodoro carrying the torch for Jose Rizal University, the returning Pontejos only averaged 10.2 points in 32 percent shooting, 2.3 assists, and 2.7 rebounds after the first round.
Come the second round, however, the two seem to have switched places and it has been Pontejos who been taking charge. With his hot streak, the Laguna native now has per game numbers of 14.4 points in 48.5 percent shooting, 2.5 assists, and 3.1 rebounds.
Talking about his gunslinger, coach Vergel Meneses said, “Simula pa lang, alam ko yung time ni Paolo darating. Siguro ito na yun.”
More than his coach always challenging the Heavy Bombers that they need to sweep their last six games in order to move onto the next round, Pontejos shared that it has been another voice which has pushed him into playing the best basketball of his career. “Pinagsasabihan din ako ng mommy ko. Pinapagalitan ako kung pangit laro ko,” he said while laughing.
The JRU guard fondly recalled that he stayed up late right before his career-best performance wherein he scored 32 points. And so he told his mother, “Sabi ko sa kanya, ‘Okay lang pala magpuyat.’”
Mrs. Pontejos’ priceless reaction? “Sabi niya, nagalit, ‘Hindi pa rin!’”
