Scottie Thompson is off to the pros, but certainly this isn't the way he wanted to close out his NCAA career
Perpetual senior Earl Scottie Thompson has had quite the career in the NCAA. The native of Digos was last season’s Most Valuable Player, as well as helping the Altas to three straight Final Four appearances in from 2012 to 2014.
This year, after another stellar season, Thompson looked poised to lead the Altas back into another postseason run, but all that came crashing down Friday afternoon at the San Juan Arena when top-seeded Letran dominated Perpetual, ultimately ousting them from the Final Four picture.
While it was no doubt a heartbreaking moment for the Altas and the fans who were there to support the team, no one took the loss and the subsequent elimination harder than Thompson, who played his last game as an Alta.
With the inevitable end nearing, there wasn’t much left that Thompson could do.
As the buzzer sounded, Letran moved on into the Final Four, while Perpetual bid goodbye to their NCAA Season 91 run, and in effect, bid goodbye to their captain and MVP, Scottie Thompson.
Heartbroken, emotional, and distraught, Thompson remained on the bench with a towel draped over his head, as the Perpetual Alma mater song played for the final time this season, and for the final time with Thompson in an Altas jersey.
Thompson is off to the pros, where he’ll be playing for fan favorites Ginebra. As early as now, the versatile floor general is already drawing fan interest from the “NSD” faithful. And while “Earl the Pearl” is bound to do big things in the pros, no doubt he would have wanted to end his NCAA career much differently.
