NEVER GETS OLD. Of course, San Beda-Letran went down the wire.
Now it can be said, San Beda College is the top-seed for the 10th year running.
Up against archrival Colegio de San Juan de Letran, it could never come easy, but the Red Lions proved their championship mettle in powering through for a 83-78 victory versus the Knights on Wednesday at the MOA Arena.
Ola Adeogun buried both the go-ahead and game-clinching baskets that halted their rivals’ rally dead in its tracks for the second time in a row. Adeogun yet again tipped the scales in favor of San Beda with 21 points and nine rebounds en route to the first-seed in the NCAA 91 Men’s Basketball Tournament.
The five-time defending champions were in control for majority of the game and were still up, 74-64, inside the last three minutes until Kevin Racal and Mark Cruz mounted a 14-4 charge that suddenly sent the rivals level at 78 with 35 ticks on the clock.
It was at that point that the Lions found Adeogun down low and the Nigerian responded by powering through the defense of Mcjour Luib and Felix Apreku for the go-ahead basket. Off a timeout, Letran obviously gave the ball to Cruz who launched a long-distance trey that clanged off the rim.
Then sent to the line, Baser Amer made the first and missed the second, but Adeogun was there yet again for the rebound and putback that sealed the final score as time ran out on the Knights.
Satisfied with the effort of his entire team which had four other players in double-digits, coach Jamike Jarin said in his post-game conference, “My boys, they’re young, they make mistakes, but that’s what coaching is all about.”
Cruz and Racal ended with 29 and 17 points, respectively, as Letran fell for the second time in three games against their rivals.
San Beda and Letran get one week to rest as they await the results of the Jose Rizal University-Mapua Institute of Technology matchup that will determine the third- and fourth- seeds on Friday still at the MOA Arena.
