MY TURN. CJ Isit took control as Mapua edged out JRU for the third-seed.
Proving yet again just how loaded their backcourt is, Friday at the MOA Arena was CJ Isit’s turn to carry the load for Mapua Institute of Technology.
The third-year guard poured in a season-high 27 points, including the last basket of the game, to propel the Cardinals past the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers, 81-76, all the way to the third-seed in the Final Four.
Teytey Teodoro erased what was once a seven-point deficit for JRU to only 72-73 inside the last two minutes before Allwell Oraeme scored three straight points to push the Cardinals to 76-72.
Following a quick hit from Marco Balagtas that again closed the Bombers to only two points behind, Josan Nimes found Isit alone on the left corner. More confident than he had been all season long, the Mapua guard took and made the shot that sealed the final score as their opponents were unable to execute any plays the rest of the way.
Talking about his big game that came at the most crucial time, Isit said in his post-game conference, “It’s been a long three years so just to be here is just unbelievable.”
Backcourt-mate Darell Menina added 16 points while Allwell Oraeme added 11 points and 24 rebounds as the Cardinals set a date with twice-to-beat Colegio de San Juan de Letran.
Teytey Teodoro had 16 points for JRU who will meet top-seeded five-time defending champion San Beda College.
