FOR LOLA. CJ Isit is offering his personal-best year and Mapua's most successful season in recent history to his late grandmother.
Mapua Institute of Technology and Jose Rizal University tussled for the third-seed last Friday at the MOA Arena.
The matchup had much significance for both teams, but it took on a personal meaning for two of the players involved. While Paolo Pontejos just went out and played for the Heavy Bombers to be able to show strength in light of his papa’s passing, CJ Isit dedicated the Cardinals’ 81-76 win to his late lola.
The third-year guard could not have chosen a better game to offer to his lola as he delivered a season-best 27 points, including the final basket that kept their opponents at bay for good. “Definitely, this game is for her. Actually, this season is pretty much dedicated to her,” he told ABS-CBN Sports.
Two weeks ago, lola Remedios, CJ’s grandmother, died of natural causes at 97-years-old.
According to the Toronto-born guard, who he is now is thanks in large part to lola Remedios. “She moved to Canada and raised me and my sister since birth. She then moved back to the Philippines when I was 16,” he said.
Mapua has a lot to thank lola Remedios for as well because her being in Manila made Isit’s decision to become a Cardinal an easy one. As he shared, “She’s the reason I chose to come here.”
