Red Cubs keep rolling, close in on seventh straight title

Their opponents may have two of the five Mythical selections, but it was San Beda High School who showcased a total team effort in Game One of the NCAA 91 Juniors Basketball Tournament.

As expected, the Red Cubs relied on a balanced attack to put down the upstart Arellano High School Braves, 76-68, on Friday at the MOA Arena.

The six-time defending champions nursed a 37-36 edge at the half before turning in their only 20-point quarter in the third to establish a 59-52 advantage they protected until the final buzzer.

Evan Nelle and Albert Bordeus scored 16 and 12 point, respectively, to show the way for San Beda’s fluid offensive which dominated the assists department, 21-12. Sam Abuhijle, the only Red Cub in the Mythical Team was limited to only four points.

Talking about their total team effort, head coach JB Sison said in his post-game conference, “Gamun talaga, we won the whole two rounds of elimination with that, bakit namin babaguhin?” Due to their sweep of the eliminations and then Game One win, San Beda now only needs just one more win to claim an unprecedented seventh consecutive championship.

Mythical selections Guillmer Dela Torre and Carlo Abadeza along with Rookie of the Year Lars Sunga combined for 46 points to lead the effort for the Braves who were making their first-ever Finals appearance.
