STUDENT-ATHLETE, STILL. Mark Cruz will still be in Letran as a student even while he suits up for the Star Hotshots.
In his final season for Colegio de San Juan de Letran, Mark Cruz vowed to go all out and bring glory back to Intramuros.
After a sixth-place finish a year ago, a return to the Final Four would have most probably sufficed for the Letranistas, but Cruz wasn’t kidding about going all out as he led the Knights all the way to their 17th title.
It would seem that capping off his stellar collegiate career with a championship is the perfect end to his time in the walled city, but apparently, “Ant-man’s” mission in Letran isn’t over just yet.
Right after nets were cut, trophies were raised, and he was named Finals MVP last Thursday, Cruz was told his by his mentor during their post-win interview: “Pare, tatapusin mo academics mo ha.”
Cruz nodded in agreement as he, coach Aldin Ayo, teammate Kevin Racal, and the press all had a good laugh at the quip. The five-foot five-inch guard was selected in the third round of the 2015 PBA Draft and will be suiting up for the Star Hotshots beginning next week.
As such, Ayo wanted further assurance that his now departed lead guard will have something to fall back on whatever happens in his professional basketball career.
Asked about it again in a later interview, “Ant-man” told ABS-CBN Sports,”I promise talaga dahil alam kong magagalit sa akin yun kung ‘di ko tinapos.”
Cruz said he’s unsure about the exact number of units he has left to get his degree in Marketing Management, but expressed, “Pero konti na lang, konti na lang.”
He also added, “One year na lang. Ang goal ko kasi sabay kami ni Mcjour (Luib) kasi hanggang next year na lang siya.”
As such, Letranites need not fret because the Finals MVP will still be around campus – at least until the summer that is. “Magsu-summer ako para mahabol ko si Mcjour,” he shared while laughing.
