Generals survive Red Lions in NCAA volleyball opener
Emilio Aguinaldo College fended off an upset-conscious San Beda to open its back-to-back title campaign.

Emilio Aguinaldo College faced a tough customer in unheralded San Beda Tuesday to start its title-retention bid.

The Generals needed five sets to fend off an upset try by the Red Lions and escape with a 21-25, 25-21, 25-20, 23-25, 15-10 win in the 91st NCAA men's volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

One again it was Howard Mojica who saved the day for EAC as reigning Most Valuable Player smashed 24 booming kill to highlight his 31-point output.   

Keith Melliza scattered 18 points including 17 off spikes for the Generals, who won against College of St. Benilde last year in three games to bag their breakthrough title.

Perpetual Help and Arellano University, likewise, got off to a strong start to join EAC in the early lead.     

The Altas trampled the San Sebastian Lady Stags in straight sets, 25-19, 25-20, 25-19, while the Chiefs edged Letran with a come-from-behind 20-25, 21-25, 25-20, 25-19, 15-12 win.

Mapua also scored an opening day victory as the Cardinals came back from a set down to defeat the Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates, 16-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-21 while the Blaze Spikers hammered a 22-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-22, 15-10 victory over Jose Rizal University.
