San Beda tramples EAC in football season opener

San Beda overpowered a listless Emilio Aguinaldo College, 11-0, to set in motion its bid for a sixth straight championship in the 91st NCAA football competition at the Rizal Memorial Football field.
Ralph Abriol came through with four goals, two in the first half when the Lions erected a 5-0 lead and another two in the second when they put the Generals away for good to seal the former's first win of the season.
"We really went for a big win because we want this first game dictate what its going to be like for us this season," said San Beda assistant Christopher Pediamonte, speaking in behalf of head coach Aries Caslib.
Miguel Caindec opened up the scoring for San Beda with a quick strike in the eighth minute before Abriol came through a brace in a span of 12 minutes starting in the 13th that set the tone for the ghastly rout.
The unsung hero though was skipper Michael Asong, who was influential in keeping the together with his veteran leadership.
"The good thing about this team is that anyone can step up when called upon," said Pediamonte. "But if there's a player that I consider the most influential, it's definitely Asong."
In the other match, Arellano University dumped Mapua, 6-1, to likewise jumpstart its title campaign.
