The defending champion Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals collected their second straight win to take the early lead.
Reigning Most Valuable Player Howard Mojica received ample support from his teammates as the defending champion Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals conquered Jose Rizal University, 25-17, 25-21, 25-17, Wednesday in the 91st NCAA men's volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
The high-scoring Mojica delivered 18 points coming from 16 attacks and a pair of block kills to lead the Generals to back-to-back victories for the solo lead.
EAC showcased total team effort on offense with Israel Encina chipping in 10 markers and Kerth Melliza scoring eight to help Mojica, who scored 31 points in the opener last Tuesday. Hariel Doguna and Denzel Rasing combined for 10 points while setter Nicco Bihag dished out 40 excellent sets in the Generals 41 spikes that shattered the Heavy Bombers’ defense.
Karlo Gorospe took care of the Generals floor defense with 12 excellent receptions and 12 digs in EAC’s 57-minute demolition JRU, which dropped its second straight loss in as many outings after a sorry five-set defeat to College of St. Benilde last Tuesday.
Meanwhile, San Beda recovered from its five-set setback against EAC with an easy 25-17, 25-23, 25-22 victory over San Sebastian.
Gerald Zabala led the Red Lions with 14 points while Mark Enciso and Earl Gonzales had 11 and 10 markers, respectively.
The Stags fell to 0-2 to join the Heavy Bombers in the cellar.
In the juniors division, the Staglets avenged their seniors with a 25-20, 25-17, 25-15, thrashing of Red Cubs behind Romeo Teodones' 13 points and Raxel Catris' 10 markers.
