Soltones endures swollen ingrown in scoring spree
Hindi ko na po uulitin kasi ang sakit e -- Soltones on her battle with a toe ingrown

Reigning Most Valuable Player Grethcel Soltones was unstoppable Saturday as she uncorked a season-high 33 points in the Lady Stags' cold revenge win over the defending champion Arellano University in a rematch of last year’s finals.

She returned to action in the 91st NCAA women’s volleyball competition with a bang after missing San Sebastian’s previous game against the Mapua Lady Cardinals because of an injury -- a self-inflicted one.

The SSC-R spiker, who hails from Catmon, Cebu, admitted to ABS-CBN Sports that she had to take a rest last Wednesday as she was nursing a swollen ingrown on her right foot.

“Kasi po ang kulit ko po e. Kasi 'yung ingrown ko namamaga po (kaya di ako nakalaro last time),” said Soltones, who had 31 attacks in the Lady Stags' fifth straight win in as many outings at the expense of the erstwhile undefeated Lady Chiefs, 25-23, 18-25, 25-23, 25-21, with a chuckle.

“Kinalkal ko po kasi ang kuko ko kaya ayun namaga. 'Yung sa kanang paa po na daliri 'yung pinakamalaki,” added the national team mainstay who saw action in the Asian U-23 and Singapore Southeast Asian Games.

“Pero OK na siya, dumudugo na lang po.”

Soltones explained that it all started with a cracked nail.

“Hindi ko nga po siya nilinis. Parang may nabiyak na kuko and 'yun sinubukan kong tanggalin tapos ayun namaga na."

Soltones, whose season-best output erased her 32-point outing in SSC-R’s 25-18, 20-25, 25-18, 25-23 win against Jose Rizal University in Season 90 last Nov. 24, 2014, said that she was actually playing through pain during her stint in the Shakey’s V-League Reinforced Conference where she and Ateneo De Manila star Alyssa Valdez helped PLDT Home Ultera win the crown against Philippine Army.

“Before championship po ng PLDT namamaga na siya. And noong championship ayun tiis ganda,” said Soltones, who added that she needed to take antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medicine.

“Noong Mapua ang kalaban namin pinagpahinga na lang ako ni coach (Roger Gorayeb) kasi ayun lumalala na 'yung sakit,” she said.

It was an absence that almost cost SSC-R its perfect record with the Lady Stags barely escaping an upset ax in five sets.

For Soltones, she learned a valuable - and painful - lesson the hard way.

“Hindi ko na po uulitin kasi ang sakit e,” she said in a child-like manner. “Pero mahilig po talaga akong mangalkal sa kuko.”
