Red Lions solidify bid for a Final Four seat

San Beda roared closer to a Final Four berth at the resumption of the 91st NCAA men’s volleyball competition Monday.
The Red Lions wiggled out of a two-way tie to take the solo fourth place after a 21-25, 27-25, 25-13, 25-18 win against the Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates at The Arena in San Juan.
Mark Christian Enciso led San Beda’s show with a 21-point explosion coming from 17 kills, two block kills and a pair of service aces in the Red Lions’ fifth win in eight games to sit behind pace setters defending champion Emilio Aguinaldo College (6-1), Perpetual Help (6-0) and College of St. Benilde (5-1).
Skipper Alfie Mascarinas had an all-around performance with 18 points, all from attacks, while providing great floor defense with three digs for the Red Lions, now a win ahead of Arellano U Chiefs (4-3).
The Pirates’ fifth loss in eight games formally knocked LPU out of the Final Four race.
San Beda will close its elims campaign on Wednesday in a crucial match against Perpetual.
Eliminated Mapua collected its seond win in eight games after sending Jose Rizal University to its eighth loss in as many outings, 25-20, 25-15, 25-20.
In the juniors match, the LPU Junior Pirates (3-3) downed the Red Cubs (1-5), 25-13, 25-16, 25-20.
