San Beda gave undefeated San Sebastian and reigning champion Arellano U a free ride to the Final Four.
Jose Rizal University breezed past the listless Mapua Lady Cardinals while San Beda officially gave undefeated San Sebastian and defending champion Arellano University the first two Final Four seats in the 91st NCAA women’s volleyball competition Monday at The Arena in San Juan.
JRU destroyed the Lady Cardinals 25-18, 25-23, 25-16 to stay on the right track in their drive for the remaining two semis spots.
Rosalie Pepito and Shola Alvarez powered the Lady Bombers to even their record to 4-4 tied with Lyceum of the Philippines University.
Pepito, who currently leads the scoring race in the open spiker position ahead of reigning Most Valuable Player Grethcel Soltones of San Sebastian, unleashed 13 attacks, three block kills and a service ace for 17 points while Alvarez finished with 14 markers.
Meanwhile, the San Beda Red Lionesses denied LPU a chance to take the solo fourth place with a 21-25, 25-23, 25-15, 21-25, 15-12 win.
It was the Lionesses' third win in eight outings while the Lady Pirates fell to their fourth setback against the same number of wins, a full game behind No. 4 Perpetual Help (4-2).
San Beda’s victory gave the Lady Stags (6-0) and the Lady Chiefs (6-1) a free ride to the next phase and are now both eyeing to take the twice-to-beat advantage reserved for the top two teams after the eliminations.
In case SSC-R sweeps the 9-game elims, the Roger Gorayeb-mentored Lady Stags will get an outright pass to the championship round armed with a thrice-to-beat incentive and will send the three other teams that qualified in the next phase to a stepladder semifinals with the no. 2 team taking a twice-to-beat advantage.
JRU collected 31 points from Mapua’s errors while adding woes to the Lady Cardinals, who are winless in eight games.
In order to get a chance to contend for at least a playoff for a spot in the Final Four, the Lady Bombers need to hurdle the defending champion Arellano University and hope that College of St. Benilde (5-1) won’t get its sixth win in its remaining three assignments.
